What To Do If Your Car Has Been Defected

If you have received a defect notice for problems with your car then you may be wondering what you need to do in order to get your vehicle roadworthy and legal again. Depending on what type of a defect notice you have been given there are a couple things that need to be done to get a defect clearance for your car.

Categories of Defect Notices

Defect Notices fall into two different categories, or levels.

  • Minor Defect Notices are given for vehicles that have problems that need to be fixed, but don't make the vehicle unsafe or a danger at the present time. There is usually a time period given for getting the problems fixed.
  • Major Defect Notices are given for more severe problems with the car. If the vehicle is really bad off it may even be "grounded" which will require you to have the vehicle fixed where it sits, or have it towed to a repair shop to have the corrections done.
  • A Formal Written Warning may also be given if an officer feels that the vehicle is not an immanent risk but needs to get fixed anyways.

How to Get Your Defect Notice Cleared

Once you have gotten a defect notice you must follow the instructions on the notice and do what is required to make your vehicle road worthy again. Once the appropriate repairs have been made you will have to bring your car back in to be inspected. You can have your vehicle inspected by:

  • An RTA Inspector
  • An Authorized Inspection Station (AIS)
  • An Authorized Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS)

Your defect notice will let you know where you need to go to get the defect clearance for your car.
